Week 29 - Monday, March 31 through Friday, April 4

Dear Memorial Parents and Guardians,

I'm prepared to call it: Winter and all of its snow is OVER! Sure, it made one last stand last week and I was a little worried that we might have to have our 6th snow day, but we made it through. I know it's been one long winter when I hear students tell me that they hope that school WON'T be canceled again! That said I will feel a little better about my prediction once I can see the brown grass under all of that snow.

It was a busy weekend for our students (and, therefore, for our parents & guardians too!). On Friday afternoon, our boys' swim team competed in their last meet of the year. The girls' team raced on Wednesday in their final meet. The kids swam great races. These final meets are a little different because they are comprised only of relay races. In many cases, our swimmers had to swim unusual events. Nevertheless, our kids performed beautifully. As has been the case all year, their excellent sportsmanship was as impressive as their swimming. We are very proud of our swimmers.

Saturday was a full day and night for the runners on our track teams. The boys and girls' teams raced in separate meets. Both teams had outstanding performances. The boys finished second overall and the girls' team took first overall - the first time that Memorial's team has ever done that! The 7th grade girls were undefeated throughout the season and the 8th grade girls' record was 15-1. I am always so impressed by our student athletes. As with our swimmers, members of our teams raced well and were wonderful fans, as well. Our kids cheered for their teammates as they raced, jumped, or threw.

Tonight is our Parent Forum. We will get started at 6:30 p.m. Officer Patti Maynard, our former school resource officer, will be joining us to talk about different ways that we can keep our kids safe on social networking sites, like MySpace. While we have conducted similar Parent Forums in the past, this one will be a little different because we will be spending more time giving you ideas about how to monitor your kids on a social networking site, particularly MySpace. At this time, I believe we will be in the computer lab on the 2nd floor, room 309. As you come into the building, we will have signs posted to direct you to the Forum.

On Tuesday afternoon, members of our Jazz Band will head to South Portland High School to work with different musicians as a part of Jazzapalooza. The activities of the day culminate in a fantastic performance on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. when our young musicians will demonstrate some of their new skills.

Have a great week. As always, please don't hesitate to contact me if you have questions or concerns.

Sincerely,
Megan Welter
