Week 36 - Tuesday, May 27 - Friday, May 30
Dear Memorial Parents and Guardians,
I hope that you had an enjoyable Memorial Day weekend. It was a busy holiday weekend for many of our students, parents and staff as the members of our band performed on Sunday and Monday. On Sunday the members of our band marched in the Peaks Island Memorial Day parade. After their outstanding performance, they were treated to lunch on the island. First thing on Monday morning, our band was at it again at the South Portland parade. The students assembled at SMCC and paraded down Broadway, lead by the students in the color guard. The students’ rehearsals and practices definitely paid off as they looked and sounded great! Congratulations to Mrs. Quinn for leading our kids (yet again)! Thank you to all of our parents who accompanied our students to both performances. Your ongoing support makes these kinds of experiences possible.
Last week, members of the staff met to talk about creating an award in Helen Flaherty's name. This award would be given to a 6th, 7th and 8th grade student at our end of the year final assembly. Students will be given a chance to nominate a peer for the award and our awards committee will select students using the established criteria as well as the explanation that the student lists on the nominating form. In addition to this new award, many members of our staff got together on Wednesday afternoon to go for a walk near Spring Point in order to see the bench that has been placed along the path in Helen's name. It is on a lovely part of the walk and the view from the bench is extraordinary. I have heard from a few of our students that they have already taken a walk to visit the bench, too.
It is hard to fathom that we are quickly approaching the end of May. Members of our grade level teams report that they are encouraging their students to focus on their studies not only so that they experience academic success, but also so that they can help their homeroom in the 4th quarter academic challenge. As part of the challenge, students check their grades each Friday and record the grades on a form that is turned into their teacher. The grades are assigned a point value and each student's grades are tallied and then entered into the overall homeroom tally. Homerooms are competing against one another for bragging rights as well as an Italian Ice party. You can also check on your child's progress by checking the online gradebook. The link to the online gradebook is on the homepage of our website.
Our last hat day of the year will be held on Friday. Our students have been tremendously generous in their $2 donations, which are being made to the American Cancer Society. Last Thursday, I reminded students to communicate with parents and guardians if they needed additional money in order to participate. Our cafeteria supervisor noted that in the first 2 hat days, many students did not have lunch money and asked to "borrow" money from the cafeteria. I told students that we cannot load money, particularly at this time of the year because there is not adequate time to get everyone to pay the money back to the cafeteria. Please talk with your child to make sure that he/she is bringing enough money for both lunch and the hat day. Your help is greatly appreciated.
Our athletic teams are participating in their final competitions over the next two weeks. Our teams have enjoyed some amazing games and meets so far and I'm certain that the exciting competitions will continue through the end of the season, as well. As the students in our Drama Club gear up for their June 4th performance, their rehearsals are also intensifying. This week, students will rehearse on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 2:30 - 4:30 p.m. Parents of our actors and actresses are asked to pick up the students following rehearsal.
As always, you are encouraged to contact the school should you have questions or concerns. Have a wonderful week!
Sincerely,
Megan Welter
