Week 25 – Monday, March 15 – March 19, 2010

Dear Parents and Guardians,

With the advent of Daylight Savings Time, the approach of spring feels undeniably upon us.  Looking ahead to the weather that is expected this week, it seems that temperatures will continue to be unseasonably warm.  While we expect the weather to be warmer, please encourage your child to dress appropriately for school in accordance with the school’s dress code.

Thank you to all of the parents who joined us for our dance on Friday night.  While we did not have a huge crowd, the students seemed to have a great time and participated in a number of different dance contests.  Thanks to the parents who joined us and thank you to all of the parents who donated snacks and water.  The kids loved them!

There are a number of different activities this week.  On Monday, March 15 at 6:30 p.m., parents are invited to the Summer Activities Fair that will be held at Mahoney Middle School.  There will be a number of representatives from different agencies & programs that provide programs and activities for middle school-aged students in the summer.  Some groups that will provide information will be:  The South Portland Community Center, The South Portland Land Trust, Ripple Effect, Day One, The Middle School Transition Academy, Music Camps, Tutoring options, School sponsored Summer Sports, SMCC Summer Camps, Student Bus Pass, and more!  A similar fair was held last year and we received very favorable feedback from the parents that attended.  We hope that you will join us at 6:30 p.m. at the Mahoney Middle School Cafeteria for this very informative evening.

March is “Music in our Schools” month in South Portland.  On Tuesday night, our bands will be performing at the South Portland Auditorium at 7:00 p.m.  Your involvement and support is indispensable in the success of our music programs in South Portland.  We are so proud of the progress that our students have made this year and they are very excited to show off their skills.  We hope to see you on Tuesday night!

Our Parent/Teacher conferences are also underway this week.  Teachers will be meeting with parents in conferences this Thursday and next Thursday.  If you have submitted your conference requests but have not received your conference time, please contact your child’s teacher or call the Main Office.

In the coming weeks, we have a number of other activities as well.  On March 24, we will hold our first Wellness day.  March 24th is an early release day and students will be dismissed at 11:45.  In the morning, the students will participate in a number of Wellness Day activities.  We welcome any help that our parents can give.  Some of these activities include teaching students different kinds of dance and other strength and movement activities, including yoga.  The activities that have been chosen for the day reflect the students’ interests based on a survey.  In this survey, students indicated that they were also interested in learning about how to relax and about how to make healthy snacks and meals.  We have already lined up a few speakers but would welcome more.  If you have expertise or interest in any of these areas and would be interested in being involved in the day, please contact Megan Welter.

A Note from the Music Boosters:
As many of you are aware, South Portland High School will host the Maine Music Educators State High School Jazz Festival on March 26 and 27th!  This is a tremendous undertaking, as we will host over 70 bands during the 2-day event!  We hosted this event last year and it was a huge success by all accounts!

Mr Skeffington and the music booster steering committee are well on the way to planning another wonderful event this year.  While it is a lot of work, it is also a TON of fun!

We are now recruiting people to volunteer on the two days of the festival-Friday March 26 and Saturday March 27.  Please contact Cindy Fletcher, fletcc@aol.com if you can help.  Please let us know when you are available (Fri, Sat or both, and what hours).  If there is an area you prefer to work in, let us know!  We try hard to accommodate everyone!  We especially hope that our middle school parents, and vocal music parents will volunteer to help us with this event!

FYI, if your child is performing in one of the bands YOU WILL see them perform.  As always, we work the volunteer schedule to make sure every person is able to see their kids play.

Thanks in advance and I look forward to receiving hundreds of emails!:)
-Cindy
