Week 24 – Monday, March 8 – March 12, 2010

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Welcome back after a spectacular weekend.

This week’s Principal’s Notes will be a little shorter as there will be a more detailed message in The Mirror that will be posted online and mailed home on Wednesday.  There are a number of upcoming activities and events, including our school dance on Friday, March 12 from 6:30 – 8:30.  As always, we welcome parents to join us as chaperones.  In addition, we would also welcome donations of water and snacks to sell at our dance snack bar.  Popular snacks include small bottles of water, fruit snacks, gum and chips.  We would be grateful for any donations we receive.

March 24 will be our first annual Wellness day.  While it is an early release day, the students will participate in a number of Wellness Day activities.  We welcome any help that our parents can give.  Some of these activities include teaching students different kinds of dance and other strength and movement activities, including yoga.  The activities that have been chosen for the day reflect the students’ interests based on a survey.  In this survey, students indicated that they were also interested in learning about how to relax and about how to make healthy snacks and meals.  We have already lined up a few speakers but would welcome more.  If you have expertise or interest in any of these areas and would be interested in being involved in the day, please contact Megan Welter.

Tonight (Monday, March 8), the School Board will vote on whether or not to adopt the budget on which they worked last week.  Parents and community members are invited to attend the meeting in the City Council Chambers, which begins at 7:00 p.m.

Next Monday, March 15 is our second Community Forum of the year.  This  "Community Resource Fair on Summer Activities for Kids" will be held in the Mahoney Cafeteria.  Please join us at Mahoney to meet folks in our community and learn about new activities that your child can join in on during the summer months.  Some groups that will provide information will be:  The South Portland Community Center, The South Portland Land Trust, Ripple Effect, Day One, The Middle School Transition Academy, Music Camps, Tutoring options, School sponsored Summer Sports, SMCC Summer Camps, Student Bus Pass, and more!

Finally, if you have not yet had a chance to sign up for a parent/teacher conferences or if your child neglected to bring the form home, you can get a new form by accessing the home page of our website.  Please fill it out and submit it to school as soon as possible.

Have a wonderful week.

If you are receiving this newsletter and would like to be removed from the list, please send an email to Janet Flynn (flynnja@spsd.org) in the Main Office.

Sincerely,

Megan Welter
